Get Rid of Toe Nail Fungus
At Alpine Dermatology & Laser we offer the cutting Sciton Nd:Yag treatment for toenail fungus.
Why did I get an infection? Toe Nail Fungus is also called onychomycosis and tends to be due to a genetic tendency for infection and due to damage or injury to the toe nail itself which allows the fungus to get into the nail.
What about oral medications? Oral medications can be toxic to the liver and clear only about 50% of infections with a 50% recurrence rate in general. This means that all in all, oral treatments give about a 25% clearance rate.
With laser treatment, clearance rates of onychomycosis have been in the high eighties in some studies. For severe infections, we can combine laser treatments with topical and oral medications for the highest chance for clearance possible.
Treatment consists of heating the nail plate itself to a particular temperature that kills the fungus. Three to four treatments are usually required and some infections require more. The treatment is not particularly painful, but does make the toe nail very warm.
For the best results, change out your socks often, don't wear plastic shoes or flip flops and always dry your socks on high heat. Throw out any shoes that you wore barefooted. A recent study showed that 6% of socks still had living fungus in them after being dried in a high heat dryer. Regular heat drying leaves much more than that.
