American Society for Dermatologic Surgery - Circle of ExcellenceKaren Stolman, M.D. is highly skilled and experienced in the use of cosmetic injections. Dr. Stolman received the Seal of Excellence in Injectables and Filler Treatments from the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. Dr. Stolman has decades of experience with cosmetic injections, and now specializes in hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, and neuromodulating toxin (Botox®, Dysport®) injections.   These treatments are effective in rejuvenating the face, hands, neck, and décolleté, in both men and women. They are also used to improve scars, facial asymmetries, and manage bruxism (teeth grinding) or TMJ pain.

Filler and neuromodulator toxin treatments are safest when performed by an experienced physician, such as Dr. Stolman, who specializes in cosmetic treatments. Effective and natural-appearing filler and toxin treatments require advanced knowledge of anatomy, filler and toxin properties, principles of aging, and artistic expertise. These skills are rarely achieved without the advanced training that Dr. Stolman has received.

Botox® and Dysport® relax active muscles to soften the overlying wrinkles. This treatment benefits patients between the ages of 20 and 60. These treatments are commonly used to treat wrinkles of the brow, forehead, and lateral eyes. Botox® or Dysport® treatments are small needle injections into your skin, that usually take three to five days to begin working. Their effect lasts approximately three to five months. Allergies are rare.   The most common side effects are temporary swelling, bruising, pain, and headache. When these agents are administered by experienced injectors like Dr. Stolman, they can be used to rejuvenate and enhance beauty in both women and men. See “When should I begin treatment” below for more information.

As we age, we loose bone, fat, and tissue volume in our face, neck, and hands. While laser and light treatments help to improve fine texture and tone, they cannot replace that lost volume, and fail to address the deeper wrinkles, shadows and hollows that can develop with age in our face, neck, and hands. Filler treatments can offer a “liquid face lift”, helping to delay the need for surgical cosmetic interventions. Prior to your filler treatment, it is best to avoid oral blood thinners for ten days. These include: aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, red wine, St. John’s Wort, and garlic. See “When should I begin treatment” below for more information.

Filler and toxin treatments may result in temporary bruising, pain, swelling, and rarely allergy. Most fillers on the market have been shown to stimulate the growth of new collagen and elastin in our skin after each treatment. Most fillers and toxins are temporary and some are even reversible. While the filler may be temporary, the new collagen and elastin they generate is not temporary, but may last many years. This is believed to diminish the need or quantity of repeat treatments. Healthy collagen and elastin is fundamental to having youthful-looking, healthy skin. Growth of collagen and elastin is not only dependent on the quantity of filler used, but also on your overall health, nutrition, and genetics. For example, cigarette smoking compromises the formation of new collagen and elastin. Different filler brands have different durations, usually ranging from six months to two years.

Rejuvenating filler and toxin treatments are best begun when you are in your 20’s to 40’s depending on the degree of aging your skin has sustained. If over 50, it is not too late. As we age, filler more than toxin is still beneficial and helpful, but you may need a larger quantity of filler to get the same benefit as someone younger. From age 50’s to 60’s toxin will provide less dramatic rejuvenation and should be either combined with filler or replaced with filler. The neuromodulating toxins are not recommended over age 65.
